Gaia es la la Madre Tierra. Es la vástaga del Caos o nació después de él.

La aparición de Gaia
Lo primero que existió fue el Caos, un vacío de inexplicable origen. Después del Caos, Gaia aparece, siendo hija del Caos o no, y también Eros, por los cuales el Cosmos tuvo lugar; pues el mundo no fue creado, sino engendrado por Amor y el coito.

Urano

Después de Gaia nace Urano (Cielo), como igual a ella; para que los dioses tuvieran en ella un seguro lugar permanente. Ellos tomaron, en Urano, un lugarde descanso seguro.
Esto es el porqué de que el Cielo y la Tierra, a pesar de sus diferencias, son iguales. Y después de Urano, ella llevó a cabo, por sí misma, las Montañas y el Ponto, el mar. Ella dió luz a Urano, para poder ser cubierta por él; y yaciendo con él, engendró a los Titanes, los Cíclopes y los Hecatónquiros. Sin embargo, Urano, odiando su prole, los escondió a algunos o muchso de ellos en secretos lugares de la tierra, y a otros, arrojó al Tártaro, el cuál es un lugar sombrío en el Infierno y tan lejos de la Tierra como la Tierra del Cielo.

Y desde que vió escrito en el destino de las estrellas tiranas que ellos conspirarían en contra, Gaia, lloró por la destrucción de sus hijos, se contrayó y estiró dentro de ella (donde sus hijos estaban escondidos), y dirigió a los Titanes, persuadiéndolos para que atacaran a su padre. Con este propósito ella dió a Cronos una hoz adamantina, con la cual él castró a su padre y lo destronó. Cuando los Titanes depusieron a Urano, éstos profetizaron que la venganza por los terribles actos que habían perpretado vendrían poco después. Los Titanes liberaron a sus hermanos, los que habían sido arrojados al Tártaro, y Cronos se conviertió en el segundo soberano del Universo. Ostentando en poder, sin embargo, Cronos comenzó a ver las cosas como su predecesor, y pronto volvió a limitar y encerrar a los Cíclopes y los Hecatónquiros en la misma oscura profundidad en la cual habían estado antes. Y desde que Gaia y Urano predecieron que sería destronado por su propio hijo, Cronos comenzó a devorar a sus vástagos en su nacimiento, en un intento de escapar del destino.

Los intentos eran inútiles, y Rea (laesposa de Cronos), estaba cansada de quedarse embarazada tantas veces pero nunca ser madre, engañó a su marido escondiendo una roca entre sus ropas y se lo dio para que se lo comiera, como si fuera su hijo Zeus. Cuando Zeus creció, él y los dioses guerrearon contra los Titanes durante diez años. Entonces Gaia predeció la victoria de Zeus si ponía a los hecatónquiros y los cíclopes de su parte. Él, tomándolos como aliados, destronó a Cronos y encerró a los Titanes en el Tártaro, poniendo a los Hecatónquiros como sus guardias.

Gaia appears The first to exist was Chaos, a void of unexplained origin. After Chaos, Gaia appeared, whether she was the offspring of Chaos or not, and also Eros, through whom the whole Cosmos came to be; for the world is not created, but procreated through Love and intercourse.

Uranus

Then Gaia bore Uranus (Sky, or Heaven), as an equal to herself; for as the gods have in her a sure standing-place, they have, in Uranus, a secure resting place. This is why Heaven and Earth, though being different, are equal. And after Uranus, she brought forth, by herself, the MOUNTAINS and Pontus, the sea. But she gave birth to Uranus, so that he would cover her all over; so laying with him, she bore the TITANS, the CYCLOPES, and the HECATONCHEIRES. However, Uranus, hating his offspring, hid some or many of them away in a secret place on earth, or as some say, cast them into Tartarus, which is a gloomy place in the Underworld as far from Earth as Earth is from Heaven.

Gaia behind Cronos' coup d'état

And since it seems to be written in the fate of stern tyrants that they will be conspired against, Gaia, grieved at the destruction of her children, and being strained and stretched inside her (where the children were hidden), addressed the TITANS, persuading them to attack their father. For this purpose she gave Cronos an adamantine sickle, with which he castrated his father, and dethroned him. When the TITANS had deposed Uranus, the latter prophesied that vengeance for the terrible deed they had performed would come afterwards. The TITANS then liberated their brethren, who had been hurled down to Tartarus, and Cronos became the second ruler of the universe. Being in power, however, Cronos started seeing things much as his predecessor, and soon he again bound and shut the CYCLOPES and the HECATONCHEIRES up in the same dark depth where they had been before. And since both Gaia and Uranus foretold to their son that he would dethroned by his own son, Cronos began to swallow his offspring at birth in an attempt to escape fate.

Such attempts are vain, though, and Rhea 1 (Cronos' wife), tired of being so often pregnant yet never a mother, deceived her husband by wrapping a stone in clothes, and giving it to him to swallow, as if it were the newborn child Zeus. When Zeus grew up, he and the gods waged war against the TITANS for ten years. It was then that Gaia prophesied victory to Zeus if he would have the CYCLOPES and the HECATONCHEIRES on his side. And he, taking them as allies, dethroned Cronos and shut the TITANS up in Tartarus, appointing the HECATONCHEIRES as their guards.
